iX Teacher Spotlight — Nehoray Carmi — Data Science Tel Aviv 2019.

iXperience

January 10, 2022

"AI will play a bigger and bigger role and will become more accessible. A data scientist will need to have not only formal skills but also the ability to adapt to new technologies and understand what he/she actually needs for the current task at hand."

Nehoray carmi, iXperience 2019 Data Science Head Teacher – Tel Aviv

Nehoray is a lecturer at Washington College and a researcher at Omilab at the Open University of Israel. He's also a qualified Electrical Engineer, but found his calling in teaching and academia.

He likes to hang out with his family, and writes small computer games (he views the storytelling of computer games like an advanced form of CYOA stories). His Data Science class in Tel Aviv will be treated to his programming and machine learning teachings, peppered with 'a barrage of non-related facts about mythology, psychology and general history'.

What are you working on now?

At The Open Media and Information Lab (OmiLab) we work with the national library of Israel in attempt to extract hidden information from old archives. One of the more successful attempts was when we recently deduced the approximate year a video sequence was filmed from analysis of the audio and background noises.

What do you love most about the Data Science industry?

The moment where you manage to make a deduction from the heaps of Data you’ve collected. Two great quotes summarize the idea:

1. Data is like garbage. You'd better know what you are going to do with it before you collect it. - Mark Twain
2. One man's trash is another man's treasure - unknown but I’ll reference Skyrim

Why did you decide to get involved with teaching and how do you continue to keep things fresh?

  • We are a family of teachers so even at my bachelors degrees level I taught math and physics part time. For me even if the course materials do not change (as is the case with with math) the class does, and each class is a new riddle to understand and adjust to, in order to get the maximum results.

How do you see this industry changing in the next year to five years? What skills will Data Scientists need to have?

AI will play a bigger and bigger role and will become more accessible. A data scientist will need to have not only formal skills but also the ability to adapt to new technologies and understand what he/she actually needs for the current task at hand.

What skills will iX students have after graduating from your class?

Programming, basic machine learning and the rest of the syllabus, but more importantly, I hope they will learn how to acquire skills and teach themselves the new things they will need in the future.

What’s one piece of advice that you have for the iX class of 2019?

Don't learn for the money, you will get it one way or the other. Learn and work to improve and enjoy yourselves – that way you will perform better and like what you are doing in the long term.

What are your desert island books?

Tough one. I would probably take “War and Peace” – with the sheer weight and volume of the books, I could make a raft.
