"The Management Consulting market keeps evolving, and should always keep one step ahead of the businesses of their clients. During the next 5 years, I expect to see a lot of challenges related to the digitalization of the economy."
Previously a Stratagy Consultant at Accenture, Nuno Lucas now divides his working time between Portugal, Poland and Colombia, working as a consultant for an international retailer. Incredibly, he also teaches the Management Consulting course on the International Management Master in ISCTE Lisbon University.
If that wasn't enough, this enthusiastic marathon runner founded and manages an amateur running club, can whip up a tasty meal in no time, and is currently writing a poetry book. Unravel his many mysteries below.
Nuno Lucas, iXperience Management Consulting Head Teacher, Lisbon
There is a lot I love about Management Consulting, but I would highlight three points:
1. Not knowing what my next day will hold – the type of requests vary so much - and because I can do practically everything, I never had to really decide “what I want to be when I grow up”.
2. It is about learning and the ability to learn – whenever a new project starts you need to hit the ground running, and because of the different subjects and industries, you need to learn fast.
3. The fast track – not only in terms of career progression, but also the speed at which people give you more responsibility and more complex challenges.
I have always liked to teach, for the thrill of meeting new people and also because of the challenge it is to simplify or find different ways of explaining different subjects.
I started my teaching path in internal Accenture training modules. I volunteered for several years with Junior Achievement, teaching students aging from 6 to 18, and then I was invited to teach in an International Management Master in a University. I intend to keep on going.
The Management Consulting market keeps evolving, and should always keep one step ahead of the businesses of their clients. During the next 5 years, I expect to see a lot of challenges related to the digitalization of the economy. Consultants will need analytical and also communication skills, the ability to learn and ask, but also to do and recommend, and, because these characteristics aren't usually present in one person, they will need to work in very diverse teams.
Students will gain a thorough understanding of Management Consulting and what Management Consultants do, as well as the techniques, like problem solving or communicating ideas, neccessary to complete projects.
Be curious and ask. Make the most of the whole experience, but also make sure you take advantage of the teachers and assistants' experiences, as well as the people you will be learning from in the internship.
I have run 9 marathons, and I have been in some unusual places, like Chernobyl and the middle of the Amazon. Lastly, I am writing three different books (one of them a poetry book).
I know a considerable number of Spice Girls songs (not that I am proud of it).
