iX Teacher Spotlight — Manuel Garrido Peña — Data Science Lisbon 2019

Written by

iXperience

"Working with datasets allows you to discover things that nobody ever has before, on a daily basis!"

Manuel Garrido, online course creator and head Data Scientist of a tech startup, returns to teach Data Science to our Lisbon 2019 class. Learn more about what to expect from one of Europe's leading Data Scientists this summer.

You taught Data Science for iX 2018. How will you be shaking things up this year?

This year, we will be teaching some more advanced topics like an introduction to Deep Learning and Big Data.

Tell us more about the Lisbon tech landscape. What makes it such a great and exciting place to be learning more about tech?

It's no surprise that the Lisbon tech scene is booming at the moment, with lots of companies setting up their tech offices here. The affordable cost of living, incredible weather and one of the best surfing paradises on earth makes Lisbon a very nice place to be at the moment. That's why I'm here after all :)

What is the biggest lesson that students took away from Data Science last year?

What do you hope to impart this year?

  • Right now the term “Data Science” is being used and abused by people and it's sometimes more of a buzzword than anything else. This means there are lots of people trying to ride this wave online by writing very poor tutorials or online courses. Last year, we had people that came thinking they knew “a lot about Data Science” and left with actual professional knowledge. I hope to impart the same this year.

How will your students be putting what they learn into practice in the professional experience component of the program? What makes it different to regular junior work experience?

The students will get hands-on work in a company, on a project that we will select to make sure its challenging, but achievable. Moreover, while they are working, they will have sessions with me so I will continue to guide them during their work weeks.
