Example project you may work on
You will work in a team to address a pressing problem in Africa. These include identifying vulnerable households in rural South Africa, forecasting flood frequency and severity in Malawi and predicting traffic congestion and package delivery times in Kenya. Your team will be tasked with cleaning the data and building a machine learning model that provides actionable insights to improve the livelihoods of the local community. In doing so, you will gain hands-on experience applying the techniques that we cover in class to solve a real-world problem.
The technical barriers to doing data science are becoming smaller and smaller every year. You no longer need access to a supercomputer and a graduate degree in computer science – you can learn how to build cutting edge neural networks in a 20-minute medium tutorial. What’s really going to distinguish data scientists over the next 10 years is the ability to communicate effectively and affect change through their analysis.
iX Pre-Semester is an intensive learning experience designed to help you start Fall with serious momemtum, ahead of recruiting season.
For the first week, you'll focus primarily on picking up new industry-relevant skills at a rapid pace. The second week, following a weekend break, will focus primarily on applying your skills to a real world project that you can add to your resume and discuss in job interviews.
Unlike many other online programs, you'll have support from your teachers and teaching assistants throughout the day so you're never stuck on a problem for too long.
"iXperience was a one-of-a-kind learning immersion. I gained experience and knowledge in ways I never had before. I can now say that I have incredible new skills and have used what I learned to make an impact at a startup company in Cape Town."
An unbelievable starting point and foundation with great resources and networks. This program allows you to learn and apply a new skill at a fast rate while having exposure to a new culture, giving you a real life experience.
The Data Science course does exactly what it's supposed to do. It's fast, very practical, and very geared towards how Data Science works in the real world. It's an experience designed not to dip your toes in the water, but to throw you right in. The class is fast and the lifestyle is a huge adjustment, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It’s the coolest learning experience I've ever had.
Thanks to our professor and TA, whose data science expertise was matched both by pedagogical ability and engagement, my classmates and I have not only strengthened our coding skills, but earned a contextual understanding of how big data analysis can inform the guidance of major systems and reveal otherwise overlooked patterns.
I've honestly learned more in these few weeks than I have in three months of many of my college courses. It's been an honor and a privilege to work with someone as knowledgeable as our teacher, Andrew. I woke up every day interested in what we were learning next.
I wish every class I'm taking in college followed the hands-on approach this program took with my Data Science course. The integration of projects and classes really helped me get a handle of the concepts to hit the ground running. The remote program also went a long way towards making me comfortable with remote working in general.
